Planting instructions

Before planting a tree you need to give thought to what is appropriate for your setting. Here are some things you need to think about before making your choice.

The trees may be small when supplied but give some thought to their final size and avoid planting large trees too close to buildings (within 10 -15 metres).

Avoid planting trees on habitats with existing conservation value, such as flower-rich grassland, wetland or heath.

If you are planting trees in the countryside, particularly in areas close to ancient woodland, we recommend that you attempt natural regeneration in the first instance perhaps complemented with some planting using locally grown trees if possible.

Take care of your trees and plant them as soon as you can after they arrive. If you can't plant them immediately, then store them out of drying winds & under shade to protect against freezing or over heating. Always plant your trees within seven days of arrival.

To give your trees the best start plant trees when soils are moist and free from frost. The best time is between November and March, but you can plant cell grown trees at any time of year, provided that you water them regularly if planted in summer.

Cover the root plug with 25mm of soil; firm the soil well around the roots.

Mulch a metre wide circle around the base of the tree with composted bark, manure or grass clippings.

Voles, rabbits, hares and deer all eat trees or strip the bark. An appropriately sized tree shelter can help prevent the loss of your tree- not usually necessary in a garden.
